Hi, Claire. Can you tell us about your role at One Nexus?
I’m the Accounting and Payroll Manager here at One Nexus, so I guess you could say I wear quite a few hats. As the payroll manager for UK operations, I work hand in hand with HR to oversee the payroll function and ensure everybody gets paid on time. As the accounting manager, I produce the monthly accounts for Nexus Business Solutions LLC, our North American branch of the One Nexus Group, as well as supporting the Management Accountant for Nexus Mobility Solutions. Because I’ve been here for 17-plus years now, part of my role is to provide financial insight to the One Nexus leadership team to help them make strategic decisions. It’s great that I’ve built up an excellent level of trust within the team!

That’s great, Claire. Can you tell us about your journey with One Nexus so far?
The opportunity for a fresh start and a new career path drew me to One Nexus. After finishing school at 16 with aspirations of becoming a dancer, I pursued scholarships in dance. Eventually, I moved to a YMCA in London to help me focus on my ballet training. However, after a couple of years of touring professionally, I realised I needed a more stable career. That’s when I stumbled upon an opportunity with One Nexus in 2006. It was my first contract job, and I found the role interesting, so I decided to give it a go. I started with One Nexus as a data entry temp and, after a few months, was offered a permanent role in the billing team. Throughout my time here, everyone has been incredibly supportive, and I’ve even been given the opportunity to pursue qualifications like the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). It’s been a long road, especially considering I had two children along the way, but Nexus never wavered in their support. Balancing family life with studies wasn’t easy, but I’m proud to say I’m almost at the finish line - just two papers away from becoming a fully qualified Chartered Management Accountant! The course has helped me develop the ability to see things strategically and to understand how each part of the organisation contributes to the greater whole of One Nexus Group.

What would you say you enjoy most about your job?
What I enjoy most about my job is the people I work with. Our team gets on really well together and, even though we primarily work from home, we stay connected through platforms like Teams and maintain a great rapport, supporting each other whilst still enabling us to have those important “water cooler” moments. As well as my great colleagues, the flexibility in my department is fantastic. Many of us have children, so being able to handle school runs or emergencies without feeling guilty is a huge relief. I appreciate being able to log on and work whenever I need to, especially since I collaborate with colleagues in different time zones like America. This flexibility allows me to manage my responsibilities effectively. There is also great variety in my role, and every day brings something new, which adds to the excitement.

Outside of work, what do you enjoy doing?
Outside of work, I have a few passions that keep me busy. My family is my top priority. There’s never a dull moment with two energetic boys, and I cherish the time spent with them. I also enjoy going to the theatre to watch ballet or musicals, or simply reading; but finding time for reading can be a challenge amidst the chaos of family life! Two years ago, I delved into the world of martial arts by taking up Aikido. What I enjoy most about Aikido is the sense of empowerment it brings. Despite being one of the few women in the club, I’ve learned that with the right technique and dedication, I can be just as strong as anyone else.

Finally, what is one thing you would like readers to know about yourself or One Nexus that they might not know already?
As mentioned above, I love my dance and am a qualified dance teacher. While I’m not actively teaching at the moment due to other commitments, it’s a passion of mine that is very close to my heart. For One Nexus, I think it’s important for people to realise the extent of our global reach. We operate on a much larger scale than many people realise, with a presence in countries like America, Australia, and New Zealand. So, we’re bigger than most people think.
